About Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Lunenburg is a stunning historic port town on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Halifax and just west of Bridgewater. Founded in 1753 as one of the first British attempts to settle Protestants in Nova Scotia, Lunenburg is one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 1995).
The town is considered the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America, having retained its original rectangular grid pattern layout and appearance from the 1700s and 1800s, with over 400 buildings. 70% of these dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring distinctive colorful wooden architecture including the iconic “Lunenburg bump” dormer.
Lunenburg offers the magnificent waterfront home to the legendary Bluenose II schooner, the award-winning Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, beautifully preserved 18th-century churches including St. John’s Anglican Church and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, the historic Knaut-Rhuland House Museum, charming galleries and boutiques along colorful King Street, the Lunenburg Opera House, and active shipyards and working fishing wharves. The town has been recognized as Canada’s Most Beautiful Small Town by Communities in Bloom and features vibrant local breweries, restaurants, and a thriving arts community.
Lunenburg’s extraordinary combination of UNESCO World Heritage status, exceptionally preserved colonial architecture, rich maritime and shipbuilding heritage, active fishing industry, spectacular coastal setting, and designation as a National Historic Site makes it an unforgettable destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, sailors, and travelers seeking to experience one of Canada’s most authentic and picturesque maritime communities.
